The art of dressing for your life

Updated: Dec 19, 2019

The psychology of clothes is a really big deal. It is an empowering study. Spoiler alert- it’s all about dressing for yourself. Because at the end of the day- no matter the clothes, the fit, the brand- no matter how fly you might look on the outside, if you’re not feeling ‘it’ on the inside, it ain’t never gonna work.

Our clothing choices can lift us up- or drag us down. Have you ever just woken up on the wrong side of the bed (rarely happens to me~)? Then you get dressed in something you love, wear your boldest lip, your hair comes out great - and suddenly you’re on top of the world again? The key is knowing how to dress and what to put on when you need that pick-me-up most. And how far- how bold- do you take it?

Yes, it’s true: It’s an inside job, which doesn’t make it any easier. You’ve got to know thyself. Trial and error, take risks, try things out. Before long, if you pay attention and practice self awareness- you’ll get to learn what works and what doesn’t - for you.

You will see it in your face when you look in the mirror, you will feel it in your walk, and you will hear it in your voice when you speak.

You with me? There is so much more to the psychology of clothes- that’s the other truth of this- the other side.

Like for me, to get dressed even if I don’t have to makes me feel good about myself, better at least than if I stayed in my gym clothes all day. And when I have a meeting, I put time and effort into what I’m wearing. In my opinion, that says ‘I care about you, the company I am keeping, and I value your time. I take your time and energy seriously. Thank you.’

If I put something on and it kinda deflates me- then I know that is simply NOT working fo me. And that’s it. No hard feelings. I’m putting on something else- anything else. And I will keep trying until I have something on my body that has me feeling good in my skin!

Then there’s the whole thing with social media and posting outfits- like just for fun. Let’s face it- it really is just fun! I am play-ing dress-up. For me it’s almost like a game. How good can I feel? Let’s just try things out and see.

I post an outfit photo on my Instagram just about everyday (in my Stories; also found in my highlights labeled ReFashion, Outfits, Remake, 100% USED, etc.). Part of it is the mood boosting aspect of sharing something that I know can be a positive conversational piece with other people. For some, my outfits are extremely inspirational, aspirational, thought provoking- and for some just pure entertainment. I’m fine with that- ha! It is all pure fun! On a side note- it also sparks my creativity, and provides another opportunity to share my advocacy for sustainable fashion.

The outside-in effect of clothing:  I love this dress! It is an instant confidence booster- it is so fun!! And my husband purchased it for me at an estate sale. It seriously just makes me smile!

I have experienced so many times how clothes can effect the mind and your mood. And I am so grateful for that!! Clothing is a very powerful tool. It is for us to use to our advantage. I hope you will join me in celebrating that!! And dressing for the fabulous day you want to have!!

Cheers!
